See the Transformation!

A few months ago, we (Ron Houston Renovations) decided to take on a project of our own: purchasing a home that had received very little attention the past several years and completely transform it from the inside out! It has been so much fun to see this little house change and take shape over the months, and now we are really getting a taste of what the final product will be like! As you can see, we are giving this home a Crafstmen style look with a rustic flare. The white Austin stone and the hickory stained shutters and doors are what give this house the rustic flare, while still holding its Craftsmen style foundation thanks to the siding, front porch, and columns. I cant wait to see everything else unfold these next few weeks! Pics to come!

Statement Vent-a-Hoods!

WOW! is all I can say when I see a beautiful vent-a-hood in a kitchen. Not only does a great vent-a-hood vent away heat, but it also can serve as the "hearth" of the kitchen, immediately drawing in your eye and dropping your jaw. Vent-a-hoods can be sleek and modern, traditional, old world, cottage/country, French Provencial, or a combination of several styles! The way you pair them with your cabinets, countertops, and backsplash can tie the whole look together giving it the real WOW effect. One day I hope to have a statement vent-a-hood in my kitchen, but for now I suppose I'll just be inspired by them!

More than just functional...

We are wrapping up a remodeling project in Arlington right now, but I snagged a few pics of the newly remodeled home last Thursday. One of my very favorite parts of this project was the see-through, double-sided fireplace that we got to tile from floor to ceiling! What makes this fireplace so great is that not only is it going to be a great place to bring warmth to a room, but it is now a statement piece for the living room, and the sunroom. This fireplace is functional and striking all at the same time. I wish every home had one just like it. We also used the same mosaic we used on the fireplace for the stair risers next to it. Turned out gorgeous! Enjoy the pics--maybe they'll inspire you!:)

Spring into Color!

Tomorrow is the first official day of SPRING!! Wow, what a feeling! And there is just something about spring that makes me want to celebrate COLOR! Lots and lots of beautiful bright colors! And upon my search for some fun colors to add to my home (and my wardrobe), I found these awesome, and affordable, Z Gallerie lanterns in all different spring-y colors. My favorite one is probably this yellow one pictured here. Although they do have fuchsia, green, orange, white, and black as well. They have a small size (10") and a medium size (18"), for just $7.95 and $14.95 respectively. Oh how I love Z Gallerie!!

I've got the blues...

Well, if you've ever picked out paint colors for your home, you know what a daunting task that can be. I mean, all you wanted was a nice, cool grey-blue paint color for your living room, and somehow you ended up with a periwinkle blue that completely clashes with the rest of your home decor! Sound familiar? I know the feeling. But it does help that I get to help clients pick out paint colors for a living, and have done a good bit of painting in my own home, so I thought I might share some of my VERY favorite blue colors I have used thus far. And if you have any to add, please do! I am particularly partial to pale blue (is there anything more peaceful??), so excuse me if my paint colors lean that way. But I do have some suggestions for a darker blue if you're into that. So anyways, here they are, enjoy!

Sherman Williams-- Rain
Sherman Williams--Moody Blue
Sherman Williams-- Tidewater
Sherman WIlliams--Watery
Sherman Williams--Comfort Gray
Sherman Williams--Gris
Pittsburg Paints--Tempered Steel
Restoration Hardware--Silver Sage
Benjamin Moore--Heavenly Blue
Benjamin Moore--Colony Green
Benjamin Moore--Patriot Blue
Benjamin Moore--Paddington Blue

Oh, and the pic at the top is of my guest bedroom where I used the color "Tidewater" from Sherman Williams.

Clean is the new black.

So yesterday on Oprah they talked about an issue that serves as one of my core decorating principles: keep it clean, people!! It seems that sometimes, over the years, the trinkets and gadgets that have been acquired as gifts or vacation momentos tend to build up so much that they end up all over your house, and that is supposed to be home decor! This happened to me while I was in college. With all the University and Sorority swag I was given, one day I looked around and felt like I was drowning in stuff! So whenever I got married I decided it was time to bite the bullet, get rid of all of the things I didn't NEED, and start afresh! It was therapeutic to say the least.

So anyways, Nate Berkus was on Oprah yesterday and helped "makeunder" an over-cluttered, under-decorated living room of a woman in Louisiana. I must say, it was so inspiring that I know that many women across the country could benefit from a similar "purging" of...well...crap. Take a look at the before and after pictures (before is the 1st pic, after is the 2nd) and be inspired to do the same in your home! Get rid of what you can, store some of the things you can't part from, and give a mini-makeover to the stuff you are going to keep on display. I know you can do it!!
